Special Interest Groups
CHI '95 Special Interest Groups (SIGs) enable groups sharing an interest to
meet informally for an hour or two of discussion at the conference. CHI '95
provides meeting facilities and will advertise SIG meetings to the rest of the
conference. Proposals will be accepted until the conference opens on a
space-available basis. Proposals received by December 16, 1994, will be
advertised in the Final Program if accepted. SIGs accepted after that date
will be announced only at the conference.
Following the conference, SIG organizers are encouraged to submit an
article summarizing the SIG for publication in the SIGCHI Bulletin.
Additionally, several SIGs have led to proposals for successful workshops
at subsequent CHI conferences.
Review Process
SIG proposals will be reviewed by a committee, with acceptance based on
the relevance of the theme to the field.
Format
Summary
Prepare a one-page summary describing the SIG. It should begin
with title, leader, leader contact information and keywords, and continue
with a summary of the topic, issues and goals. This summary must be
prepared in the Conference Proceedings format, except that
no abstract is required. It will be published in the CHI '95 Conference
Companion if the SIG is accepted.
Proposal
Prepare a one-page proposal for review purposes, describing
how the SIG discussion will be organized.
Upon Acceptance
For proposals received by December 16, 1994:
- Authors will be notified of acceptance or rejection by mid-January, 1995.
Summaries of accepted SIGs will be published in the CHI '95 Conference
Companion. Note that because of the late submission deadline there will be
no opportunity to prepare new versions of the summaries, so your
submission material must be prepared carefully.
- Electronic versions of accepted SIGs will be published on a CD-ROM.
Details on how to submit electronic summaries will be sent with notices of
acceptance. The electronic versions are due February 17, 1995.
The summaries of accepted SIGs which were received after December 16
will not be published.
Additional Information
The success of a SIG depends on organizers providing effective leadership
and planning. Potential SIG organizers are encouraged to contact the
SIG chair in advance
of submitting a proposal to discuss their ideas and any
questions they may have.
Checklist for Submissions
Every year some submissions are returned without review because the
authors failed to follow the guidelines established by the conference
committee. Don't let this happen to you! Please follow the steps in this
checklist in preparing your submission, and double-check that you have met
all the requirements before sending it.
- Read the General Submission Instructions.
- Note that submissions must be in English, and that electronic mail or
FAX submissions will not be accepted.
- Fill out the Standard Cover Sheet.
- Fill out the Planning Information Sheet.
- Prepare the one-page summary in the Conference Proceedings format,
as described above.
- Prepare a proposal for review, as described above.
- Be sure that your submission contains no proprietary or confidential
material. Submission of video or pictures of identifiable people should be
done only with the understanding that responsibility for the collection of
appropriate permissions rests with the submitter, not CHI '95.
- Collect the Standard Cover Sheet, the Planning Information Sheet,
the summary, and the proposal, in the order given, in a packet. Use 8.5 x
11 inch or A4 paper.
- Make sure the packet is STAPLED, not loose or held by clips.
- Make an extra, camera-ready copy of the summary. Do not staple it
to anything,
- You may include a self-addressed reply postcard which will be
mailed to acknowledge receipt of your submission.
- Send your submission packet, the camera-ready copy of the
summary, and the reply postcard, to the Special Interest Groups Chair at the
Send To address.
Receipt by the Deadline assures publication of the
summary.
